Silverton Train

Description

My mother took a picture of me in Silverton CO., standing in front of the proper (and most popular) means of travel to that city from Durango.
The weather in Durango was perfectly warm, clear and sunny. Once we got to Silverton, it turned to Seattle-style rain. The mountains surrounding Silverton tend to catch rainclouds and wring them dry. All that precipitation, over the course of millions of years carved the Animas River Canyon (The Spanish named the river "Rio de las Animas Perdidas", "River of the Lost Souls".). That's why the railroad was able to build a mostly water-level route between the two cities back in 1881.
I decided that the left hand side of the photo was both empty and busy. It didn't contribute to the portrait, so I trimmed it.

Few people know that the full name of the river is/was Rio de las Animas Perdidas en Purgatorio, River of Lost Souls in Purgatory. It got shortened over the years and many just call it the Animas today. There is a ski resort on US 550 between Silverton and Durango called Purgatory, probably the only remnant of the original name.
