Puget Sound Commuter

Sound Transit is a three-county transit authority operating in Pierce, King, and Snohomish Counties on Washington state's Puget Sound. Sound Transit decided sometime around 200 that the dense rail network between Tacoma and Everett would be ideal for a commuter rail operation that would bring thousands of riders into and out of Seattle every day and coincidentally reduce congestion and pollution on an already worn and crowded Interstate 5.
Currently, the south end of the line is at Tacoma's historic Freighthouse Square. This building once served as a freight warehouse for the Milwaukee Road. It is now a busy shopping center with a number of restaurants and a ticket lobby for this train.
The southward extension of the line through South Tacoma and on to Lakewood is well underway with the construction of a link between the Milwaukee Road's Tacoma Eastern Gulch line and the former Northern Pacific "Prairie Line" to South Tacoma and variously onward to Ft Lewis and Lakewood before meeting up with the main line again at Nisqually.
Today, #908 waits patiently for a load of baseball fans who will fill a run north to Seattle for a Mariners game on Sunday.
[ Edit ] Certain parties want to relocate the Amtrak station away from its current position at the edge of the former Northern Pacific freight yard and into Freighthouse Square.
